William a.k.a Mille, first of all, we are curious to know more about you, and how did you discover fishing ?

Bonjour Adrien, it´s a big honour for me to be a part of this interview series! Let´s dig into the questions! My name is William Pettersson, but everyone calls me “Mille”. Every French guy who text me by using Google Translate always start the message with “ Hello Thousand”, which is funny. I just turned 24 last week, and I live for the moment in a wonderful place called Åland. Google it! I started my fishing career when I was about 7 years old, and I did at that time not know how far it would go! Now I am completely lost in the world of fishing.

I saw you on facebook, with big Pikes but also with huge Salmon in your hands… are they your favourites fishes ?
I always hear “Salmonisher” says : When you hook your first salmon, you become hooked up for this fish. Is it true ?

The Baltic salmon migrates to the rivers in the northern parts of Finland and Sweden, and they pass Åland during about one month in the beginning of summer. Then we go trolling for them in very deep water. You need to have a lot of patience, since it can go a very long time without any bite. But when you finally get one, it´s the best day ever! They can grow very big, a salmon of 15 kg in not uncommon to catch. This kind of fishing is very addictive, so yes; you get hooked for life.

I am a joker Mille, i did some research on you hahaha, and i founded those pictures. Do you remember those moments ?

Haha! Yes, The one on the right is my first pike ever. It was 106 cm, a pretty good start! The one on the left is my first 10 kg fish I ever caught, must have been 2010 or something like that. Good old times!

In france, we have the image of Sweden as a country of big spaces, lot of water, and savage places. Which place has fishing in the culture of swedish people ?

It is very popular.  I read a few weeks ago that 20% of Swedish people fish at least one time every year, which is insane! I have been to a few different places in Sweden to fish, and what amazes me is how different it can be! There are rivers, lakes and archipelago along the whole coast, and you can catch pike in literally every spot you see.

If i want to go fishing in sweden, in which region should i go ?

You should go to Åland instead! 😀 Åland is the place me and my partner in crime Pontus film 90% of our films in. The fishing is absolutely fantastic on Åland, and you can catch many different species in one day. Pike, perch, zander, sea trout, salmon. And the nature here is almost too beautiful to be true.

Where is your favourite place for fishing ?

I have to say though that my favourite place to fish is in Yamal, in the Northern parts of Russia. The downside is that it is very expensive and it takes three days to travel to “our” lake.

For me, i have a reference in the art of making fishing video : It’s Rolf Nylinder. Do you know this guy, have you ever seen his work ?

Yes I have, he is a monster when it comes to film making. Even if I have never tried fishing trout with a dry fly, I still get goosebumps when I see that he has released a video. I can highly recommend visiting his channel. (And I also heard rumors that he has French subtitles on his videos, great news for you)

Let’s talk about Kanalgratis, 185K followers on youtube, that make it as the largest fishing channel in Europe… When did you join the adventure? What is your job, or maybe your jobs because i think you have to do a lot of different tasks ?

This could be long…I have been best friends with Pontus for about… 9-10 years? And he has been working full-time on kanalgratis for maybe 8 years, so we have been posting our videos on Kanalgratis since then. But about 2 years ago the owner, Johan Ruhe, called me and asked me if I wanted to start work there “for real”. I needed about 15 seconds to think about it, and I have never regret that decision! I do a whole lot of stuff, but the main thing is to do fishing videos and put them up on Youtube!

Can you believe that we need two or three big football stadium to meet all of the viewers ? Do you feel that when you go outside ? Do you regularly meet some fans on the water ?

It’s insane really. Pretty incredible to think that 185.000 people have watched our videos and thought that it was so good that they want to subscribe. But we are aiming to go much, much higher than that! Is happens occasionally that we run into some viewers, that is really fun! Especially when we go down to fishing fairs in other countries. CNPL 2020 was absolutely insane, haha. We will go back there 100% sure next year to meet all the awesome French anglers!

Since you start this job, you filmed a lot of experimented anglers… Trough this activity, did you learn some things ? Did you change or evolve your fishing techniques?

Yes, of course! I have filmed so many skilled people. And the good part with filming other poeople when they try to teach things, is that I also learn quite alot! Out of all the guys I have filmed, I have learned the most from Captain Fred and mr. Ptacovsky.

You can retrieve the interview of Marc Ptacovsky just here

They teach the audience (and myself) so, so much. I can really recommend to listen carefully when those two guys open their mouths, haha! Especially with mr Jullian, he knows almost too much. Once in the cabin after shooting PERCH PRO 5, I was asking him why they always throw topwater REALLY close to bridges etc, and he held a one hour lesson about the behaviour of the perch and why they need to throw the topwaters so close. I then became really fascinated of the passion he has to know everything about fishing.

One question about France, did you ever fish in the moustache country ? How it was ? What is your feeling about fishing in france ?

Yes, monsieur! I fished in the famous lake Salagou with my friends Tosh and Canito from Scarna Fishing, it was really hard fishing but it felt incredible to fish in that mythical spot! We also caught some trouts and rainbows in a river, which was really cool. It´s always great to travel to different places and see how different the fishing is. Lure fishing for trout is not very common in Sweden, for example! It is insane how much float tubes I saw during my journey there. We can definately learn alot from how you guys fish. There are so many waters in the nothern parts of Europe that people just don´t fish, because they don´t have float tubes.

Finally, what is for you the most important in our passion?

To enjoy every day on the water, and not aim to catch the biggest fish all the times. Bring some friends, bring some good food and a lot of coffee, and that’s it! I really feel that many people nowadays only go out to catch a new PB, and forget why they went out fishing in the first place. I have a really high respect for “PB-chasers”, but that is not the reason I fish. I really hope that shines through in all of our videos that we post.

If you could fish with anyone, who would it be ?

I have fished with a lot of great people, but I have not fished with Simon Torenbeek yet. He seems to be a top gentlemen who I really would love to fish with one day!

Check the interview of Simon Torenbeek

I am going to finish this session with some words of wisdom! “All crisis, no matter how bad they are, have one thing in common. They will pass.”

Au revoir from Åland! /Mille

I hope, that we could a day, be on the water together ! For the moment stay safe, we hope you the best and continue to share some nice videos. Thank you again for your time and your generosity.
